With the win at 10am the Misfits leaped over the Black Ice into first place. The Ice needed a win to steal it back. But only one skater and an old goalie showed up to represent the Black Ice team. Some HUGE subs were given, and the black team had a comfortable 5-1 lead after one period over the old and slow Salvation Army team. After a real tough first period, Rob McHugh was solid stopping 23 of 25 shots in the final two periods. Sub Rick Olson was also having a tough first period, and even a tougher second period. In the third though Little Ricky connected on two blasts from the point for the Army. Gardner shuffled his lines like an old deck of cards in the third. Forwards were on defense. Defensemen were up on forward. Old guys paired with young guys. Bad guys paired with worse guys. You name it, it was happening. Trailing 6-5 early in the third, all the shuffling paid off as the Army scored 4 goals to take this one 9-7. "I knew Norton was tired, and when he's tired, he plays position and doesn't try to be Harold Snepsts," said Gardner. "So I put him back on defense and double shifted him. Next I rotated every guy on the team up at forward with Fab. He scored twice. We rolled the dice and won." "He tried to get me out there with Conley, but I'm old, I can't play 10 minute shifts," said Norton. "All I know is I owned Downie," said Fab. "This ain't the Village Green Bobcat. You gotta work hard if you're gonna score." So
the Ice blow a great chance to steal first place back, while the Army
creeps up into third place just behind the black team. |
