The Blizzard may be the most balanced team in the league. After 3 games, they have won by one, lost by one, and now tied. "We have Sewie, then there is everyone else," said Chris Spuglio. Conversely the Salvation Army tends to find themselves involved in the 20 plus goal games on a regular basis. You would expect a high scoring game with Kenny going up against McHugh. Instead, each goalie played pretty well and held their opponents to just 7 goals. Largely in thanks to the stone hands of Mike Mason and the shot blocking of Ernie and Ray Binky. Several times the Army also had the ball on the Blizzard goal line, but nobody could poke it home. John Sewie banged home a pair for the Blizzard in the first, but they were answered by Raymond and Fab goals for the Army. The teams would trade goals deep into the third when Raymond tied it again at 6-6 with 1:46 left. Gardner made a nice play to block a centering pass, but the ball bounced off his stick, then his skate and into the Army net with 1:30 to play. The Army had one last try when goalie McHugh came out to shove the ball up to Gardner. He slid it over to Farrell who found Mel Fiore on the left wing. Mel's shot beat Kenny as the buzzer sounded to get the Army the tie. Nothing was decided in the shootout, though Raymond had the last chance to win it. The Blizzard are holding strong at 1-1-1 while the Army resides in 7th place just above the winless Wise Men. "We all knew Mason and Raymond were One Week Wonders," said Gardner.
Pete Norton had a "quiet" game for the Army. |
